TEK(3.4A) Scientific processes. The student knows how to use a variety of tools and methods to conduct science inquiry. Objective: Given a set of scientific measurement and observation stations, TLW determine the use of scientific tools by hands-on investigations and learn their names in Spanish through student-made flashcards. Set: How do we make accurate measurements that help our observations in science? Materials: science tools, journal, Quizlet Resources:http://quizlet.com/_3i38w This lesson is an introductory lesson to the scientific tools. This lesson is one that can be continued throughout the year as you add/use tools to your scientific investigations. In addition, the flashcards created can be used as a station for review or as a way to pick the most appropriate tool for an investigation. Explore
Gather the tools needed for the station rotation and put them around the room for students to observe.
TLW participate in a gallery walk of the science tools. Students will need their journals in order to create a table to record their observations. As a modification, you can supply some students with a teacher created table. As they pass by each of the tools, they will perform an activity that explores the use of the tool; i.e. use a balance to measure the mass of an object.
After the gallery walk, the teacher will model how to use Quizlet to make flashcards that describe the tool, its use, and a picture. TLW use the notes taken from their stations to complete the Quizlet flashcards (Be sure to let them know that all science is answered in metric, not customary, units.)
The next day, introduce the next set of 5-10 scientific tools.

Explain
The tools for science are essential for accurate measurements. In addition, choosing the right tool for an experiment supports our observations and gives us reliable and valid data.
Elaborate
With their of scientific tools, TLW design a simple investigation that they would like to conduct to answer a question they have posed, follow the scientific method, and will use these questions to guide their experimental design.
What is the question I would like to answer?
What tools will I use? What makes them the best/most appropriate to use?
What are my procedures?
How will I record my data/observations?
What was the conclusion to our experiment based on our data/observation?
Workstation
As a station, TLW can access Quizlet on the I-touch to review the tools flashcards. In addition, each class can share their flashcards. This is a way to see how other students view how tools are used and the many uses that they can do with them; especially in an experimental design.
The flashcards on Quizlet can also be printed out on cardstock, and laminated for future use.
Home-to-School Connection
The links to the flashcards can be sent home to parents, so that they may review the information with their students. For students without internet access at home, the flashcards can be printed. The Quizlet website allows for the option to turn the flashcards into a game; i.e. Scatter.
